Start of Something, Piper Butcher’s new single, blends 70s country rock with modern elements of storytelling to create a wholesome and empowering anthem.

Piper’s inspiration behind Start of Something stems from a Newcastle author by the name of Susan Francis. “In 2024 I had the opportunity to be a part of the ‘Words and Music’ event at the Newcastle Writers Festival, curated by Nick Milligan in my beautiful hometown. Funnily enough, I had stumbled across the story of a Newcastle woman, and how she wrote a book purely telling her truths about her adoption, and how she met her soulmate later in her life ... apparently there were some shocking twists, and I knew that had to be the first subject I started with for my research for this event! I bought the book and got to reading all about these life stories. After I completed the read, I was truly inspired by Susan’s humbleness and patience with all of her tragic dilemmas through her years, and I knew I had to channel some of her ongoing positivity to write this song.

“At the event, I had the opportunity to meet her, and sing this song to her onstage after she read out the excerpt that stood out to me. It was such a career-making moment, and we both cried, a LOT! I’m so proud that I was able to share this song with Susan and bring light to her story and strength.”

Start of Something poetically encapsulates Susan’s story and paves the next steps for Piper’s ever-flourishing career.
